Internet Trolls
Most trolls work chat rooms and/or message boards where they do NOT have to reveal their real identity to the users of that board. Many public service chat rooms and message boards that choose to have such boards/rooms are often targets for trolls. This is the type of chat room that is being discussed in this article.
Basically a chat room or message board is about the same as far as this article is concerned, therefore references to 'ROOM' will be referenceing/addressing both the message BOARD type and/or Chat ROOM type and is used here to make a more clear concise understanding of how a troll does indeed "work a room" (be it Message Board or Chat Room).
*Note - The same trolls go to/post to the Kennett Topix Forum and eBay chat rooms, mostly using different IDs of course, BUT sometimes DO USE the same eBay ID at the Kennett Topix Forum
The majority of trolls almost ALWAYS work in pairs or groups. The wording of pair or group does not always mean that there is actually more than one person/troll doing the damage that can be wrecked on a chat room. Some trolls have numerous IDs or 'cloned' selves where they take on a persona or psyche of a character and will usually stick with the same persona even though they may change the 'persona's name as they make the rounds of various chat rooms or make repeat hits to the same chat room using different names/IDs. It is a good idea to look for these patterns of behavior if your chat room has a high percentage of trolls that seem to visit your room.
Most trolls will call it a day with your chat room and move on to another chat room once the jig is up and they realize that they have been found out, but IF a troll is dead set on one particular chat room they WILL return again and again using different names/ID's because they want to cause havoc on that particular chat room. Their aim is to keep working the room until all the members/chatters get fed up and no longer chat or the sysop (systems operator) will shut the room down because the pain of running such a room is just too heavy on both the sysop and the chatters/members of the chat room.
